Southern Fire Ant
If you live in any southern state—from North Carolina to California—you’ve likely encountered the Southern Fire Ant. These ants have a distinctive appearance: their bodies are a mix of yellow and red, with black abdomens.
While some fire ant mounds are out in the open, Southern Fire Ants prefer to build their colonies under objects to provide additional protection and shelter.
Red Imported Fire Ant
Red Imported Fire Ants have been in the United States for nearly 90 years. They originally arrived on a shipping transport from South America and have since made themselves at home here.
If you spot a mound that is roughly 2 feet wide and 1.5 feet tall, out in the open and not concealed beneath any object, it’s likely a Red Imported Fire Ant nest. These ants prefer direct sunlight and uncluttered areas.
Tropical Fire Ant
Despite the name, the Tropical Fire Ant is a native species to the United States. It is most commonly found in southeastern states, from Texas to North Carolina.
Similar to the Southern Fire Ant, the Tropical Fire Ant tends to build its colonies beneath objects or near shrubbery. These ants are aggressive and will not hesitate to attack anyone who disturbs their mound.
